The management of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, is advising the public, that it will terminate its service at 8pm due to lingering safety concerns among its drivers.

Service is expected to resume at 5am tomorrow.

We continue to meet and discuss the attendant issues with our drivers, several of whom showed up for work this morning. Meetings were held across all depots and counselling sessions were conducted at the Rockfort depot.

Meanwhile, the phased roll-out of buses began today on selective routes. These are – Spanish Town Depot – 21, 21B, 22, 22A, 23A, 26, 30, 31, 31A, 32, 32B, 44, 46 and 47.  Rockfort Depot – 83, 97, 99, 89 and 78.  Portmore Depot – 1, 1A, 3, 3A, 8A, 12, 12A, 16, 17,20, and 20A.

We continue to assess the situation and hope to have a full restoration of service in short order.

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, is to enhance security across its operations following two incidents resulting in the deaths of an employee and a taxi operator. The Company hopes to have a phased roll-out of buses from its Spanish Town and Portmore depots on Wednesday morning.

Managing Director of the JUTC, Paul Abrahams, said the staff at the Rockfort depot are tense and fearful. “One can understand their unwillingness to go out, given that the driver who was killed was from this depot. We will be providing counselling support in addition to staff bus protection in the hope that this situation will quickly come to a resolution. Consequently, we anticipate that Portmore and Spanish Town drivers will show up for the resumption of service,” Mr. Abrahams said.

In addition, some 40 police officers along with private security guards have been deployed to strategic locations to provide static duty. These include but are not limited to – the Half Way Tree Transport Centre, North Odean Avenue, Down Town, Papine to Half Way Tree, Chancery Street and North and South Parades.

Meanwhile, the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre is expected to be reopened tomorrow after it was closed due to a bomb scare.

The management of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, held an emergency meeting with various stakeholders this morning, following two tragic incidents which have left a JUTC driver and a taxi operator dead.

Several stakeholders were present including the Police high command, union representatives , the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services, TODSS, the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators, JATOO and Ministry of Transport officials.

It was a frank and candid meeting and those present ventilated issues of concern to them. The following was agreed –

• We have been assured by the Police of enhanced presence on selective routes;
• Our Operations Department will be rolling out buses on a phased basis, but we hope to have full resumption of service by peak, i.e, by 5pm this afternoon;
• We will be reaching out to the families of both deceased

We reiterate that the safety of our drivers and commuters is our paramount concern and in that regard we have been reassured by the Police that they will be out in their numbers.
We thank our commuters for their patience and understanding and regret the inconvenience caused this morning. We also wish to express our appreciation to our drivers, who remain dedicated in their call of duty in this most difficult time.

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, notes with regret two tragic incidents involving its staff and a taxi operator over the past 36 hours.

In the face of the incidents, we have established a cool off period, as we assess the situation minute by minute. The safety of our drivers and commuters is of paramount concern and so we are appealing for calm, while the matter is being investigated.

An emergency meeting has been called for 10am to discuss the developments, that will include our stakeholders including but not limited to the police, taxi associations and unions to quickly resolve the matter and to resume bus operations.

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine, Jamaica – With two days to go before the start of the new academic year, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, is reporting that it is ready for back-to-school.

Over the course of the summer holidays, we used the period to ramp-up our maintenance and servicing of units in preparation for the new school year. As a result, come Monday, we are targeting a roll-out of more than 400 buses to meet commuter demand. The bus company is also working aggressively to put back into operation buses that have been down, having received a substantial cache of spare parts to boost its fleet.

We take note of the prospect of a strike by public transport operators next week, but advise the public that we will play our part to ensure that we move our commuters to their destinations safely. Our inspectors, point dispatchers and other on the ground personnel will be hand across our operations to offer support to our customers and to respond to any query/concern they may have.

Our core values dictate that we stand by our commitment to provide a safe, reliable and convenient service to the people in keeping with the highest tradition of the company and public expectation.

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, continues to investigate the recent bus fires and has found some startling bit of information. Since the Company intensified its monitoring and assessment of buses over the course of two weeks, it has unearthed what appears to be substandard workmanship which may have caused two of the three fires.

Managing Director of the JUTC Paul Abrahams says “it appears there are efforts to undermine the operations of the bus company; both internal and external. This includes attack on members of staff and its assets. During preventative fire checks these past two weekends , we have found instances of serious breaches including but not limited to; fuel line being too loose beside a turbo, and a rag that was used to tie a hydraulic line among other displaced connections in the engine. These breaches can cause spontaneous combustion when in operation mode and may have prompted at least two of the three fires.  We are taking a zero tolerance approach to the recent fires and have warned personnel that there should be no recurrence,” adding that with the recent fires, greater focus is being placed on quality maintenance of all units.

In light of the recent fires, a Fire Prevention Team was formed. The main objective of this team is to ensure that all units are up to safety standards for the commuting public and that all procedures are adhered to. At a separate meeting this week (on Monday), Mr. Abrahams said that the fire team will report every week on the faults they have found and the corrective measures they have put in place.  A fire prevention checklist has also been developed and the staff has been given refresher fire prevention training, in addition to the regular maintenance programme in effect.

Mr. Abrahams says administrative sanctions following due process will be brought to bear on those found to be responsible for poor workmanship and that the investigations continue.

The management of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, this morning held an emergency meeting in the wake of three buses being impacted by fire in the last seven days. The issues arising from each incident were discussed and plans put in place to prevent a recurrence.

One of the short term plans is that the buses will come under greater scrutiny by our Maintenance Department. Although there is in place a monthly fire prevention maintenance programme, a decision was taken to establish Special Fire teams across the depots with the sole purpose of assessing and monitoring the fleet fortnightly instead of monthly. The special team will be headed by a fleet engineer and has been implemented with immediate effect.

Our team of mechanics and engineers will also ramp up control mechanisms such as valve adjustments, back pressure testing and coolant density tests.

Managing Director of the JUTC, Paul Abrahams, says “we note the concerns from our valued customers and wish to reassure them that we do not take these fires lightly and will put all measures in place to ensure their safety”.

The latest incident happened about minutes to 8 o’clock last night on Winchester/Hope Road, St. Andrew.

The quick action of the driver prevented the fire from spreading as he used the extinguisher to put out the blaze. He was subsequently assisted by members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade.

The fire is suspected to be caused by an oil leak. No one was injured and the superstructure of the bus was not compromised.

The bus will be back in operation in a few days.

Last night’s incident occurred metres away from the previous fire on Tuesday night which was caused by arson.
