Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited

Government Of Jamaica

About The JUTC

Connecting communities, driving progress.

Our history

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), a government-owned public transportation provider, began operations in July 1998 to bring structure and reliability to the chaotic transit system in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR). Since its inception, the company has significantly modernized its operations and expanded its services.

In its early days, JUTC was known for its white Torino buses, each staffed by a driver and a conductor. However, with the 2007 introduction of single-operator buses and electronic fare systems, conductors were mostly phased out, except on articulated buses. These upgrades, along with the addition of air-conditioned buses and the eventual switch to yellow buses bearing the Jamaican flag colors, marked a new era of comfort and modernization in public transport.

Our Mission

To provide a customer-oriented, safe, reliable, modern, cost-effective transportation service through teamwork and good conditions of employment.

As an agency of the Ministry of Transport and Mining, JUTC remains the exclusive public transit provider in the KMTR, operating daily for up to 14 hours from depots in Spanish Town, Portmore, and Rockfort, as well as outstations reaching as far as Longville, Clarendon. With over 1,200 trained and courteous drivers, it boasts the largest driver pool in the English-speaking Caribbean. Beyond daily transit, JUTC also contributes to national development through support for schools, churches, NGOs, and other institutions. Its range of services now includes charters, premium/express routes, tours, and event shuttles. Despite strong competition from private and illegal operators, JUTC continues to be the preferred choice for many Jamaicans and remains grateful for the public’s support over the past two decades.
